L’articolo evidenzia una strategia narrativa affine a quella dei cicli in prosa nel procedimento con cui Gerbert de Montreuil delinea la genealogia di Perceval, combinando la leggenda della traslazione del Graal da parte di Giuseppe di Arimatea con riferimenti puntuali al Ciclo della Crociata e alla leggenda del Cavaliere del Cigno. Gerbert trasforma la vicenda della dinastia di Perceval in un momento della storia sacra, che si snoda con un movimento circolare dalla Terra Santa all’Occidente (con Giuseppe di Arimatea) e poi dall’Occidente alla Terra Santa (con i discendenti di Perceval). La giunzione delle due leggende è operata in maniera analoga anche in altri testi, come il Sone de Nansay e il Parzival di Wolfram von Eschenbach, e si può ricondurre al fatto che varie famiglie nobili, nell’area in cui sono stati composti questi testi, affermavano di discendere dal Cavaliere del Cigno: tra queste, anche quella di Marie de Pontieu, alla quale Gerbert aveva già dedicato il Roman de la Violette.

There seems to be a striking similarity between the narrative strategies peculiar to the Grail prose cycles and the way in which Gerbert de Montreuil traces back the genealogy of Perceval by blending the legend about the translatio of the Grail by Joseph of Arimathea and some references to the epic about the First Crusade and to the Swan Knight legend. The history of Perceval’s lineage is presented by Gerbert as an episode of the sacred history, and is given a circular movement back and forth from the Holy Land to the West (with Joseph of Arimathea) and from the West to the Holy Land (with Perceval’s descendants). A similar blend of the two legends can be found in other texts, such as the Sone de Nansay and the Parzival by Wolfram von Eschenbach. A possible explanation for this situation can be found in the fact that some aristocratic families living in the countries where these texts were composed claimed to descend from the lineage of the Swan Knight. Among these families was that of Marie de Pontieu, to whom Gerbert de Montreuil dedicated also his Roman de la Violette.
