O ciclo das cantigas de escárnio e maldizer dirigidas a Maria Peres Balteira, a mais famosa das soldadeiras que participaram no espectáculo trovadoresco galego-português, foi, sem dúvida, dos mais importantes do conjunto da produção satírica peninsular. A análise dessas composições, que tiveram como cenário a corte de D. Afonso X, e também da biografia dos autores que participaram neste ciclo escarninho — entre os quais o rei Sábio merece um lugar de destaque pelas duas composições que lhe dedicou — permitem uma reavaliação do período do reinado do monarca castelhano em que estas composições foram produzidas e uma melhor percepção da sua progressão, ancorada nos diferentes temas satíricos suscitados pela actividade da soldadeira. Reafirma-se, também, uma proposta da sua identificação como filha de um certo Pero Balteiro, documentado na região galega de Orense na primeira metade do século XIII.

The cycle of cantigas de escárnio e maldizer (songs of scorn and cursing) directed at Maria Peres Balteira, the most famous of all the soldadeiras (jongleresses) in the Galician-Portuguese troubadour scene, was unquestionably among the most important in the Iberian Peninsula’s entire satirical production. The analysis of these compositions played at the court of King Afonso X, as well as of the biographies of the authors who participated in this mocking cycle – where the Wise King figures prominently, on account of the two compositions he contributed with – allow for both a reassessment of the time in the reign of the Castilian monarch in which these songs were written and a better understanding of the cycle’s progression, based on the varius satirical themes raised by the soldadeira’s activity. Finally, the claim is once again made to the effect that Maria Peres was actually the daughter of one Pero Balteiro, to whom documented references can be found in the Galician region of Orense in the first half of the thirteenth century.
