Nella formazione e nello sviluppo, nel Medioe Evo, di una tradizione letteraria nelle lingue volgari è centrale la posizione della Francia, tanto di lingua d’oïl che di lingua d’oc. L’articolo documenta ampiamente questa posizione dominante. In Francia vengono ripresi temi e motivi della letteratura alta in lingua latina, della tradizione orale locale e delle regioni vicine. Essi sono elaborati e spesso di nuovo esportati in tutta l’Europa occidentale.

The French area (both the oïl and oc domaines) has played a central role in the formation and growth of a literary vernacularn tradition in the Middle Ages. Various aspects of this role are documented in this article. France was at the forefront in the revival and new elaboration of themes and motives of the classical and medieval Latin literature and of the adoption of indigenous and foreign oral traditions. It was also the spreading point of the new forms and themes in western Europe.
