In 1984 Lejeune, later followed by Paden, suggested that the troubadour Bernart de Ventadorn could be identified with an homonymous Benedictine monk and abbot, son of Eble III and his second wife Alaiz de Montpellier. As scholars have already remarked, the hypothesis presents some chronological problems, particularly due to the difficult identification of the young nobleman with the well-known troubadour mocked by Peire d’Alvernhe in his famous gallery: Eble III’son was actually born in 1160 ca., whereas Chantarai d’aquestz trobadors was certainly composed not later than 1173. Nevertheless we are not able to put forward the abbot’s birth year to make it compatible with the troubadour’s chronology, because it would be necessary to antedate Eble III’s first marriage with Marguerite de Turenne before 1148, that is to say before her first husband’s death year: it is evident that the operation is impossible and that 1148 is the certain terminus post quem of the event.
