Since many years it is a common opinion to look at the manuscript Trivulziano 1080 (= Triv), written in the linguistic area of Florence in 1337, as the better solution to the major problem of the accidentals in Dante’s Commedia. Keeping in mind the first outcomes of the recent classification of Dante’s manuscripts, the paper analyzes the different degrees of linguistic accuracy in the treatment of Triv shown in the editions by Petrocchi and Lanza. Taking into account 1. the great deal of variants featured by Triv in comparison with the most likely archetypal lesson, 2. the northern tracts present in the Tuscan tradition and 3. the surprising florentinisms of manuscript Urbinate lat. 366 (= Urb) and of other witnesses written in Emilia Romagna or in Veneto, the author suggests a different solution, based on the best Northern tradition.
