L’articolo analizza e interpreta un’allusione cinegetica contenuta nel Premier livre (noto anche come Mémoires) di Filippo da Novara, autore italiano della metà del secolo XIII attivo nel regno crociato di Cipro. Questa si riferisce alle pratiche dell’addestramento degli uccelli da preda in uso presso i falconieri greci, che Filippo poteva aver conosciuto grazie a rapporti diretti con la popolazione greco-cipriota. Il passo offre l’opportunità di esaminare, sia pure in breve, il problema degli scambi, scritti e orali, di nozioni cinegetiche tra le tre grandi culture del Mediterraneo medievale, quella greca, quella araba e quella europea d’Occidente.

This article analyzes and interprets a cinegetical allusion contained in the Premier livre (also known as Mémoires) by Filippo da Novara, an Italian author of the mid-13th century active in the Frankish Cyprus. Such an allusion refers to the practices of training birds of prey in use among Greek falconers, which Filippo could have known through direct relations with the Greek-Cypriot population. The passage offers the opportunity to examine, albeit only briefly, the problem of written and oral exchanges of cinegetic notions between the three great cultures of the medieval Mediterranean, the Greek, the Arab and the Western European ones.
