Il libro I del Tresor di Brunetto latini contiene una sintetica storia universale, dalla creazione del mondo fino al 1260 (capitoli 19-93). L’ultimo studio complessivo delle fonti di questa sezione (Carmody, 1936) ha sottolineato l’originalità della compilazione e la difficoltà di ricondurre molte delle nozioni contenute nel testo a delle fonti. Questo studio presenta dei dati nuovi che consentono di individuare, per la prima volta, una fonte immediata della sezione storica: l’Histoire ancienne jusqu’à César, sfruttata da Brunetto per il racconto delle prime due età del mondo (capitoli 20-25). Questo ci permette di comprendere meglio la logica che sottende alla compilazione dell’intera sezione. È anche possibile identificare nella versione abbreviata dell’Histoire ancienne (la versione siglata β) l’esatta fonte che Brunetto ha avuto in mano, e individuare una connessione storica tra l’erudizione francese del primo XIII secolo e l’attività del notaio fiorentino.

Book I of Brunetto Latini’s Tresor contains a universal history from the beginning of the world to 1260 (chapters 19-93). The last comprehensive study on its sources (Carmody, 1936) stressed the originality of the compilation as well as the difficulty to retrace many of the notions recorded there back to earlier texts. This study presents new evidence that allows us to individuate, for the first time, a direct source of this historical section: the Histoire ancienne jusqu’à César, used by Brunetto for the account of the first two ages of the world (chapters 20-25). This finding allows us to understand better the logic of compilation that lies behind the whole section. It is also possible to identify in the abridged version of the Histoire ancienne (the so-called β version) the precise source that Brunetto had to hand, and to individuate an historical connection between early 13th-century French erudition and the activity of the Florentine notary.
