A stratigraphic analysis of manuscripts, distinguishing between early and late linguistic layers and the language originally employed by the author, turns out to be extremely helpful in localizing the Occitan literature medieval manuscripts. After reviewing some case studies (concerning, on one hand, prose texts contained in one single codex or in several manuscripts and, on the other, the troubadours songbooks), this article focuses on cases in which the processes of stratigraphy can be applied to the languages in contact typology (i.e. contact between Occitan and Italian dialects, Occitan and Catalan, Occitan and French). Finally, network analysis, current in Sociolinguistics and Variational Linguistics, is applied to the manuscript tradition of the Vida de sant Honorat (Provence, 14th century).
