En matière d’ecdotique des textes romans, les philologues français se trouvent dans une grande insécurité terminologique. Cette situation s’explique par l’histoire de la tradition philologique nationale, et en particulier par la prédominance des éditions bédiéristes : l’édition orientée vers le manuscrit a rendu obsolète la terminologie forgée par la critique textuelle. L’article revient sur le processus d’élaboration de la terminologie française en examinant les forces de figement et d’évolution. Il analyse quelques exportations terminologiques problématiques, notamment les substantifs «innovation» et «bon manuscrit», avant de s’arrêter sur quelques termes caractéristiques de la pratique philologique française. Pour finir, il pointe dans la tradition française quelques termes oubliés susceptibles de nourrir une terminologie internationale de l’ecdotique tout en insistant sur la nécessité d’éviter toute prolifération terminologique. Il est capital de considérer en premier lieu les concepts plutôt que les termes.

Concerning scholarly edition of Romance texts, French scholarly editors find themselves in a great terminological insecurity. This situation is explained by the history of the national philological tradition, and in particular by the predominance of the Bedierist editions: manuscript-oriented editions have made the terminology created by textual criticism obsolete. This paper deals with the development process of French terminology by examining the ways to fixedness and evolution. It analyzes some problematical terminological exports, particularly the substantives “innovation” and “bon manuscrit”, before considering some specific terms of the French philological practice. Finally, it points out in the French tradition some forgotten terms suitable for expanding an international ecdotical terminology while it insists on the need to avoid any terminological proliferation. It is crucial to consider concepts first rather than terms.
